30 inch Caisson Ramming in Northern Ontario

April 17th, 2012 by David

This is the first phase of a Mining project in Northern Ontario.  Using our 24 inch hammer we rammed down 30 inch casing 100 feet vertically through overburden and seated it into the bedrock.  We then sealed the interface and cleaned the casings out with one of our vertical drilling rigs to clear the way for our raise boring rock machine to be  set up.  It will drill through the rock into the mine stope deep underground.

HDD project in Matachewan, ON

September 27th, 2011 by David

After a several trouble filled weeks of dealing with big cobbles and boulders under the Montreal River, the Marathon HDD team has succeeded in pulling the pipe through for the installation of a 14 inch Water Main. It was one of the toughest directional projects in the history of the directional division, and we are really proud of the team’s hard work and commitment. Bravo!

You can see the new DD10 in the background.

The “Bassin’ for Kids” fishing tournament is an annual charity event that helps raise money for children in need and is one of the charities we are proud to sponsor. The cause is a great one, but the scenery is pretty good too. For more information about the “Bassin for Kids” charity event go to http://www.bassinforkids.org

They are so new we don’t have any pictures of them in action, but there soon will be! Look for them soon.

Tunneling Project for a New Water Main

April 6th, 2011 by David

HWY 417 near Moodie Drive. Finishing up the tunneling project for a new water main. We are grouting the space between the steel casing and the new pipe using a special chemical foam we add to the grout. The chemical reaction aerates the grout and makes it lighter – It also cuts down the required volume by about a third. It also helps to keep the pipe from floating due to grout pressure. The people in the cars must be wondering what we are doing with a pile of equipment in a farmer’s field.

Earth tunneling project in Montreal

March 24th, 2011 by David

Just completed a 120 foot long, 10 foot diameter earth tunneling project in Montreal for the new McGill Super Hospital. We modified one of our Tunnel Boring Machines for the job. It went under the railway tracks. We broke out into a small exit pit on Decarie Boulevard with barely enough room to pull the TBM out. It looks small in the pit but it is a big piece of steel up close. The concrete pipes we jacked in behind the TBM were pretty hefty too.
